THE BLACK BOOK

Edinburgh's Deputy Inspector Rebus finds himself immersed in a series of interconnected crimes, which may have their origin in a long-forgotten hotel fire. Ultimately Rebus may have to risk his life and career by going outside the law to solve the mystery. Reader Bill Paterson maintains a resolute reading pace, letting words create gritty images of action and character, rather than imposing himself upon the text. Paterson's authentic Scottish accent adds a splash of color to the drab Edinburgh backdrops, as does occasional Scottish slang. E.E.L.
