Beryl Markham wrote with wonderful vividness and keen intelligence about things she knew and loved: Africa, flying and horses. Frances Sternhagen reads these stories with a controlled, quiet intensity which matches them perfectly. A lesser performer would have been tempted to overact. Sterhagen sounds like the cultivated, middle-aged woman the author was at the time she wrote these stories. Her character voices are on the understated side, but well-defined. The combined talents of writer and reader leave the listener with a vivid sense of having experienced each story. J.N. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG 93]
