Steinbeck’s tales of 1930s Monterey are as haunting as the fog that frequently rolls in off the California coast. Jerry Farden’s quiet, sensuous voice delivers the details of this beautiful coastal town and the lives of the ordinary men who work the canneries and the women who work the streets. The words seem to float from Farden’s mouth as they weave a spell of times gone by. Farden’s easy narration is a good match for the simple language and low-key characters of these stories from an American master. The listener is enthralled by the magic of Cannery Row and the stories that grew from that magical place. M.B.K.
