SURVIVOR

Survivor builds on the characters King created in her 1993 novel, One On One. An offbeat, spike-haired, but lovable college student falls in love with the university's star athlete. They both have personal demons to overcome in finding their way to each other and their work. Maine natives will recognize the city of Bangor and the University of Maine at Orono as the setting for the newer story. Alyssa Bresnahan's reading conveys the great depth and emotional growth of King's characters with subtlety rather than strong vocalization. It works. The story of Kissy Mellors, Junior Clute, and their lives together and apart is the star of this performance, without the listener noticing the narration at all.
