Prodded by Peter Bogdonovich’s sensitive questioning, Welles goes well beyond details of his oeuvre or intimate particulars of his acquaintances. These conversations were recorded under austere, almost primitive circumstances. The din of distant filmmaking activity often competes with the spoken word, and someone might have suggested to Welles that he forgo his beloved cigars which at times interfere with his audibility.
