Rarely do mystery buffs feel regret when a murderer is apprehended. However, author J.M. Gregson and narrator Jonathan Keeble elicit just such a response when a drug-dealing blackmailer is killed by an upstanding citizen of an English village and the listener knows this compelling mystery is coming to a close. Because it has so many fascinating characters and a roller-coaster story, audio is the ideal format for this book. Keeble movingly portrays a character with Alzheimer's disease and his supportive wife, a crooked cop who's little better than a criminal, and a humble priest who's bullied by a nasty church member. Additional standouts are the two very different partners, Lambert and Hook, who trade good cop/bad cop personas as they carry out their investigation.
