Queenie Dove is growing up in East London during WWII, the era of the Kray crime family. She’s a survivor who knows how to take care of herself, even if it means stealing and going to prison as a teenager. Narrator Annie Aldington captures the accents and class differences of the period in this first-person fictional account, which reads much like a memoir. Whether Queenie is stealing shoes as a girl or putting on an upper-class accent to have tea at the Dorchester Hotel, where she makes off with a sable coat, listeners are in for a treat.
