WAR DOG

Jet, a mixed-breed black lab, orphaned when her owner is arrested for poaching, is requisitioned by the British army during WWII. The tale of her military career, from basic training to search-and-rescue missions on the beaches of Dunkirk and in the bombed-out cities of England, is read with an intensity befitting her dangerous endeavors. Christian Rodska sprinkles his reading with the occasional extravagantly voiced character--the shrill regimental sergeant major or the tittering old widow--to great advantage. Belying the omniscient narration in the text, Rodska's reading ensures that the listener's attention and sympathies are always with its canine hero.
