A SENSE OF DIRECTION Pilgrimage for the Restless and the Hopeful

Erik Singer’s conversational tone authentically projects the introspective revelations the author experienced during his pilgrimages to Spain, Japan, and the Ukraine. Singer should be commended for his effortless-sounding delivery as this book shifts dramatically from an account of the author's adventurous and transformational five-hundred-mile walk across El Camino del Santiago to an uninspiring and monotonous memoir. During a solo pilgrimage to Shikoku island, the author dwells on his personal regrets rather than offering sufficient details on the 88 Buddhist temples he visited. In the final pilgrimage, a journey with his father and brother to a Hasidic rabbi’s grave, Lewis-Kraus angrily confronts his father, a rabbi, for choosing a gay partner over his family—and ultimately forgives him.
