Jeff Cummings narrates this touching romance featuring independent Zoe Hoffman, an innkeeper in Friday Harbor, and Alex Nolan, a cantankerous, boozing cynic who doesn’t believe in love. In a paranormal twist, Alex is haunted—literally—he is the only one who can see the melancholy ghost of a WWII fighter pilot who is trying to remember who he is. Cummings gives Zoe a sweet voice; Alex, a gruff and snappy one. The ghost speaks with a forlorn and yearning whispering. Zoe's ailing grandmother, who moves between confusion about the present and vivid memories of the ghost, is captured in Cummings’s high and faltering tones. A strong narration allows the listener to empathize with the characters, especially as the sexual tension between Zoe and Alex increases.
