THE WILD WEST

These eight Western short stories provide an appealing anthology and include work by Twain, Harte, Hillerman, Brand and others. They depict different aspects of Western life and times--humor, bravery, adventure and carefully drawn character sketches. Jack Palance reads six of the stories with a deep, gravelly voice suited to the stories, but he uses little variety of tone, making the pieces more appealing individually than as a group. Charles Dean gives his stories a lighter touch but admirably capture the spirit of the rough frontier.
