THE IMPEACHMENT OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN

Paul Boehmer’s sophisticated voice works well with Carter’s detailed legal maneuverings, coup d’état plots, and extensive character list of political figures. Abigail Canner is appointed as a clerk in the law office that is defending President Lincoln against impeachment. Portraying an educated black woman during this divisive time, Boehmer gives the story the tension such a unique twist deserves. Despite the many prejudices she faces, Canner wins over many of her detractors with her sharp intuition and sense of right and wrong. Boehmer weaves a host of subplots, including murder and romance, with the story of a country on the verge of splintering if not for its staunch sixteenth president.
