WINSTON CHURCHILL Wartime Speeches

by | Read by Winston Churchill

Contemporary Culture • 2.5 hrs. • Anthology • © 1939-44

This is a careful selection of key paragraphs from Winston Churchill's wartime speeches in their original form; the vintage is betrayed by the hissing and popping of the technology of the day. Despite their age, however, the recordings are remarkably clear, having been remastered for maximum clarity. One can trace the progress of the war in Churchill's intonations: early on he sounds like an exhausted man, but he puts remarkable steel into words that tell a grim tale. The excerpts are from October 1, 1939, to May 8, 1945, and include some of Churchill's most famous phrases. A BBC-type narrator offers succinct introductions to each fragment. Listening to this is a memorable experience. D.W. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: DEC 93]
