The exquisite ensemble work that we have come to expect from the BBC is evident throughout this superb adaption. Brontë's framing device of Nelly Dean recounting the dramatic history of the neighborhood to the curious lodger, Lockwood--is retained here, and works beautifully on audio. Although the entire cast is splendid, Amanda Root as the headstrong and passionate Cathy, and Sharon Duce as her inimitable nurse Nelly Dean both craft especially memorable performances. Taste, grace, and naturalness distinguish every element of the dramatization, including the understated sound effects and melancholy score.
