Anglican priest Max Tudor investigates when a second body is found soon after the stabbing of a lord. Michael Page narrates this manor house mystery in an elegant British voice. He's got Malliet's sarcasm about the exploits of the wealthy down. At the same time, Page has a harsher—and, at times, sad—voice for Tudor, which reminds listeners of the hero's troubled past in MI5. The story is complicated. The reading starts with a list of characters and their relationships. At the end, Tudor's explanation of the elaborate murder plot takes quite a chunk of time. Nonetheless, Malliet's well-observed descriptions, matched with her sly humor and offbeat characters, will hold listeners' interest.
