HELP, THANKS, WOW The Three Essential Prayers

by | Read by Anne Lamott

Spirituality • 1.75 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2012

Anne Lamott's little gem of a treatise on prayer is beautifully written but, unfortunately, less beautifully narrated. Lamott's lack of vocal variation ends up sounding a bit monotone and relentless. The book's essential kindness and humor still come through loud and clear—Lamott's definition of prayer is broad and forgiving, and the instances when “Help” or “Thanks” or “Wow” might be useful range from everyday stresses to larger tragedies. Lamott’s musings on the value of speaking directly to a higher power are personal and relatable, accessible even to those who don't consider themselves especially spiritual. But the message would be that much stronger in the voice of a skilled narrator. J.M.D. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2012]
