Lee Smith wrote this brief first novel in l968. Christina Moore voices the innocence and curiosity of 9-year-old Susan, who tries to make sense of her world and the people in it. Susan passes the summer meeting the evil Eugene and coming to terms with her parents’ marital strife. Moore's tone expresses Susan’s vulnerabilities and portrays the complexities of her young life.
