THE NIZAM'S DAUGHTERS

The Horatio Hornblower of the infantry--Lord Nelson's fictional aide-de-campe, Matthew Hervey sets out on his second novel-length adventure. Like the first, A CLOSE RUN THING, this one, concerning a secret mission to India, contains equal parts derring-do and authentic period minutiae. Narrator Eric Graham sounds like a military man of the Napoleonic era--crisp, virile, and slightly stuffy. He negotiates smoothly through numerous dialects and fustian prose. In measured tones, never quite becoming animated, he gives equal weight to describing the right hay to keep a mare from getting seasick and a pitched battle.
