SUGAR HILL Where the Sun Rose Over Harlem

Mulligan's heartfelt memoir describes middle-class life in one of the better parts of Harlem in the 1950s and '60s. Janina Edwards does a great job of expressing the changing perspective of a young woman who is growing to adulthood. The story features unique aspects of Harlem culture--from Willie Mays and the Apollo Theater to Reverend Ike and Alexander Hamilton's Grange. Edwards's warm, friendly alto adds a wonderful glow to the story. Her cadence is perfect, and her pronunciation is clear. This is an excellent listen for anyone interested in New York City's history.
