CABBAGE SOUP

This ALA notable recording by the Children's Radio Theatre presents, in story and song, a zany, modern version of "Rapunzel," along with a serious adaptation of "Beauty and the Beast." Bold characters and well-written dialogue fill both tales. The witch, Dame Gawful, richly characterized through witty rejoinders and skillful inflection, contrasts with Rapunzel's innocence and rescuer Sir Juan's bumbling, but jolly, goodwill. In the second story, Beauty, portrayed in full, round tones that symbolize sincerity and goodness, releases the prince from the spell and renews a world gone awry.
