Although the plot is highly implausible, this mystery succeeds because of how adeptly narrator Ray Chase handles the dialogue. Private investigator Frank Clemons, a former cop, is dealing with two seemingly unrelated cases. In one, he follows a woman at her husband's behest. In the other, he tries to prove the innocence of an uncooperative murder suspect who is a member of a religious sect. Chase's narration highlights Clemons's complexity; at times, he appears gregarious but in reality he's lonely. To demonstrate these traits, Chase uses an effective mix of tones and inflection to emphasize key moments as well as a measured softness that captures Clemons's desire for companionship.
