In a near perfect match of voice and text, David Carpenter performs the story of Cash McLendon, a street urchin in St. Louis at the time of the Civil War. Cash has a finely honed sense of survival, which eventually leads him to marry the daughter of his wealthy benefactor. However, things go sour when she dies in a tragic accident, and Cash heads out West to find an old flame in the Arizona Territory with his thug of a father-in-law in pursuit. Carpenter adroitly gives the cornucopia of characters consistent and believable voices, matching their emotions without any melodrama. He delivers the narrative sections of the story in a suitable voice that is splendid in its pacing and inflection. M.T.F. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2014]
