Even the flawless narration skills of Simon Vance can’t make the story of shallow, callous, self-absorbed Nicolas Duhamel, a French author, an enjoyable experience. Riding the wave of fame from his bestselling first novel, which is based on a family secret, Nicholas goes to a resort haven for the rich and spoiled, where he’s a perfect fit. Vance portrays each accent of the Italian, French and Russian characters to perfection and expertly captures the attitude of the privileged with a deliciously bored attitude. Even a late attempt to transform Nicholas into a hero fails to enliven the story. This book is not worthy of the talents of its narrator.
