The story of Great Britain's covert struggle against a newly born Soviet Russia is given a skillful and erudite narration by Napoleon Ryan. With his steady pace and academic-sounding tone, we hear of a cast of players ranging from from authors W. Somerset Maugham and Arthur Ransome to the legendary Sidney Reilly. The agents' actions ranged from assisting the anti-Bolshevik armies to direct actions that included a nearly successful assassination attempt on Lenin. Ryan does well in reading the narrative--he's clear and deliberate in his pacing, and he has a confident quality to his voice that fits the text. When delivering quotes, he's able to affect a slightly different voice without overdramatization. M.T.F. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2014]
