Mark Boyett copes admirably with alien voices as well as a large variety of out-of-this-world humans. There are sophisticated androids and ruthless robots--and many, many others--in this vast space opera, the first in a projected trilogy--itself a sequel to the seven-part Saga of the Seven Suns. Boyett portrays an evil alien presence in a low, gravelly tone with a subtle cadence. Jocular humans are brighter, higher, individualized, and engaging.
