Patricia Gallimore’s splendid narration transports the listener to 1917 England. In this engaging story, Olivia Carr must contend with her shifting social status and two love interests. Gallimore’s myriad voices and range of English accents bring out the various classes of the characters—from the proper diction and tone of the distinguished and ailing Mrs. Sangster to the gossipy, quick-paced chatter of the cook. Gallimore’s deftly handled delivery captures the emotional restraint in the interactions between Olivia and her two loves, in addition to the general propriety between individuals of various classes. Gallimore’s effective narration should delight lovers of English period pieces. M.F. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2015, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2015]
