This short work describes the stagecoach journey of Mama and her brood from Missouri to California to join Pa. Mama always knows what to do whenever anything such as a thunderstorm, buffalo stampede, or desperados hit. Forbes reads this short work (it is a picture book) with great skill and verve. Her country accents for conversation do well in conveying the children's impatience, mother's calm, and the grownup passengers' reactions to this brood. M.T.F.
