With a desire to explore the road not taken--the so-called "bohemian-explorer-intellectual kind of life"--a goal she gave up after she unexpectedly became pregnant in college, literature professor Kimberly Meyer undertakes a pilgrimage with her now-grown daughter, Ellie. In a youthful, slightly sleepy voice, Meyer describes the path she and her daughter follow, which approximates the one undertaken by German theologian Felix Fabri, who completed pilgrimages from Germany to Egypt in the fifteenth century and wrote extensively about those journeys. In a contemplative but often unvaried tone, Meyer explores the relationship between mother and daughter, the desire for adventure, and the words of prominent thinkers throughout the ages.
