CRANE SPREADS WINGS A Bigamist's Story

Susan Trott gives us a smart, funny heroine who manages to violate all her own principles so promptly and repeatedly that it's amazing that she is so thoroughly likable. Effie has run away from her husband of a month because he is not a truthteller (and she's noticed he has no neck). She accepts a job as a nanny without mentioning to her new employer that she isn't single. She adores her young charge, the boy's father falls in love with her, and she has soon herself misled a great many people in amazing ways. This is a light and airy confection, and Bernadette Flagler is thoroughly deft at hitting the right tone and perfect note for a range of entertaining characters. B.G.
