ENCHANTED EVENING

Volume 3 of Kaye's memoirs takes us to China, England, and then back to her beloved India, where she grew up and where she remains as WWII erupts. Her scenic description of the world she loved in better times is historically fascinating and picturesque. But Kaye has the literary equivalent of the gift of gab and the added gift of total recall, and some of her characters are weightless. Kate Reading's beautifully lyrical voice makes allowance for much of Kaye's frivolity. She presents characters sympathetically with warmth and pathos, which gives shape to their humanity. J.P.
