IN THEIR OWN WORDS D-Day

Some artistic defects must be overlooked to discover the gems in these recent interviews of surviving WWII veterans. These old soldiers mutter and struggle to remember as they talk, with age's toll apparent in all their voices. The glider pilots, Rangers, and demolition experts still have some chilling stories of D-Day. Questioners, whom we can hear off mike, cough and prod the men to coax out their stories, sometimes asking questions so naïve and embarrassing they couldn't have been planned. The digital sound records the rambling conversations so well that the emotions surrounding the words come through as could never be possible in a printed work. J.A.H.
