THE PINCH

Rudderless and scruffy, Lenny Sklarew is wiling away the late 1960s by avoiding the draft, falling hopelessly in love with a beautiful Civil Rights activist, and reading a strange, wondrous and very rare tome called THE PINCH, a history of his once-Irish, once-Jewish downtown Memphis neighborhood. Narrator David Doersch obviously enjoys himself as he delivers this wonderfully droll and wandering history, fantasy, and ode to the author's birthplace and favorite city. Doersch especially has fun romping between the deep-fried Southern, thick matzah-ball Yiddish, and broad Irish accents that occupy almost every moment of the book.
