Richard Ferrone has always enjoyed a wide performance range, being equally credible reading an intense thriller or lighter fare. He's a good match for Caunitz's police classic, a story encompassing quite a broad range. One moment the book is a down-and-dirty urban cop story, with profane detectives, gritty street life, and explosions of violence; the next it's an international political thriller, with nations jockeying for power on the world stage and corruption in the highest places. Using a variety of well-drawn vocal characterizations and always employing the right tone and level of dramatic emphasis in any given scene, Ferrone handles this narrative job well. This is a nice way to discover a classic thriller. J.P.M. (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/JUL 02]
