In 1814 a British sea captain sets sail to thwart a rumored attempt to spirit the exiled Napoleon to America. Vivid storytelling is backed up with a wealth of historical detail, particularly the technicalities of wind-powered navigation. Stephen Thorne might well be called the British George Guidall: a reader with a distinctive and pleasing personality as a narrator, who is also a master actor capable of giving individuality to a large cast of colorful characters.
