BORDER CROSSING

Pat Barker is well known for her excellent WWI trilogy, REGENERATION. This time, the action is modern. A child psychologist in northern England saves a young man from drowning. He then discovers that the near-victim is the child who was convicted of murder thirteen years previously, in part on the psychologist's testimony. Their renewed relationship is the central feature of this suspenseful novel. James Wilby gives a sensitive reading of this tale about relationships. He conveys all the complex feelings--confusion, distrust, longing, terror--without raising his voice. The story's mood is dark, and this nuanced reading is right on target. R.E.K.
