By any measure, Linus Pauling is an influential and interesting figure in twentieth-century science and medicine. This book documents, not only his life, but also the development of science in the United States and the rich cross-fertilization among various scientific disciplines and medical research. Because of his strong belief in peace and the fundamental freedoms of speech and association, Pauling's activities during the McCarthy era offer a unique view of the role and power of government and the courage of those who, like Pauling, were steadfast in their beliefs. Jonathan Reese's reading is somewhat stiff, giving the presentation the feel of a black-and-white documentary. Despite this, and the length of the book, it's well worth the undertaking for its portrait of this complex and intriguing man and for its historical value. J.E.M.
