THE ONES THEY LEFT BEHIND

Author-narrator Antonio Elmaleh tells this moving story, based on historical fact. Two years after the Civil War, Harriman Hickenlooper, a Union soldier from Iowa, decides to retrace, on foot, Sherman's March from Atlanta to Savannah, accompanied by young reporter Rufus Dewes. Hickenlooper tries to promote healing while carrying a tattered flag rather than a gun. Elmaleh portrays Hickenlooper's many heartbreaking recollections of war as he makes his journey and captures Dewes's youthful enthusiasm and inquisitiveness, which bring some levity to the painful story. Sarah Elmaleh portrays the women the pair encounter, including Southerner Lucinda McWhorther, who ends up marrying Hickenlooper. Emotive music of the period is tastefully performed by Andrew Elmaleh.
