This true crime opus reminds me why Barrett Whitener is one of my favorite narrators. His Southern twang may be a bit more pronounced than usual, but his diction is still crisp and precise, his timbre a pleasant high baritone, his reading meticulous, the sense of his involvement complete. Here he tells of the notorious Sam Sheppard case, the headline-grabbing story of the late doctor who was jailed for the brutal murder of his wife while loudly protesting his innocence. Now, DNA technology may finally lay the mystery to rest. Whether it does or not, Whitener makes the lurid details sound like respectable--and fascinating--journalism. Y.R.
