Paul Ansdell impeccably narrates this Regency mystery, the first in the Tobias Campion series. In October 1810, new parson Campion reports to his parish, Moreton St. Jude in Warwickshire. Ansdell expertly portrays Campion's horror when he intervenes as a young servant named Lizzie Woodman is being attacked by a wealthy man. Campion quickly realizes that nothing in his privileged background has prepared him for the poverty of his parishioners. Ansdell dynamically portrays Campion's friends--and enemies--when he suggests that the wealthy help their poor neighbors. His standout creations are warm, kind Mrs. Bickles and strong-willed Dr. Hensard, who steadfastly support Campion's efforts. Listeners will enjoy this splendid mystery as well as the social commentary that provides a look at the beauty and darkness of the period.
