The author's search for her family history produced a vivid picture of the lives of slaves and free people of color in Louisiana at the end of the Civil War. Robin Miles shows versatility with the Creole and French characters at the core of this story. Her characterizations rely on accents and inflection and distinctly reflect personalities, family origins, and social status.
