Best known for having been half of the 1970s musical duo Captain & Tennille, the author delivers a charming, intimate account of a fascinating life, much of it lived in the blinding glare of the entertainment industry spotlight. Thick with a Southern affect, her narration is as candid and raw as it is warmly honest. Her voicing, not surprisingly, is excellent and moving. Much detail is offered about young Tennille’s Southern roots and loving nuclear family, which did its best to handle problems with recurrent bouts of alcoholism. While she can be highly critical of her aloof and rather oddly-behaving ex-husband, “Captain” Daryl Dragon, she’s also kind and empathetic in her account of him. Tennille’s expressed hope is to help others who may be involved in a toxic marriage or relationship, and, in doing so, she provides a thoughtful, informative memoir. W.A.G.
