Golden Dagger Award winner Keating is best known for his Inspector Ghote (Bombay Police) series, but he’s written widely. This book is set in England and is seen from the eyes of a corruptible police detective. Vincent Brimble reads with an introspective, lower-middle-class British voice that is often rough and almost crude. The minor characters are distinguished primarily by accent and are nicely done, particularly the Jamaican police clerk and the Scottish detective. Keating is a low-key author, and this is more Ruth Rendell than Mickey Spillane. Brimble captures the common man’s perspective of the tale.
