Special Agent Christopher Whitcomb is a righteous man whose passion reverberates through COLD ZERO, his memoir of life in the elite FBI Hostage Rescue Team. Jonathan Marosz's tone superbly mirrors Whitcomb's belief that what he does is right and for the good of the country, and that anyone who disagrees deserves his wrath. Marosz deftly mixes Whitcomb's certainty with the indignation that arises when an assignment, like Ruby Ridge or Waco, goes bad. The book has two minor shortcomings. Whitcomb frequently alludes to his New England upbringing, yet Marosz's voice clearly originates elsewhere. In addition, Whitcomb extols the changes the FBI has undertaken to combat domestic terrorism, but those passages seem naive in the glare of current events. D.J.S.
