FLATLAND A Romance of Many Dimensions

Published first in 1884, this work, written by a clergyman, reduces life from three dimensions (called spaceland) to two (flatland) in a fiction as satirical as GULLIVER'S TRAVELS. Patrick Frederic races along in his deep-throated voice, almost shouting at times, but making it sound like the mountains of nonsense make sense to him. "King: Out of my line? Do you mean out of the world? Out of space? I: Well, yes. Out of YOUR world. Out of YOUR space. King: I do not in the least understand you." Like the king, all readers may not understand this combination of parody, philosophy, mathematics, and tall tale written in the stilted language of another century. J.A.H.
