Dickinson's little gem is composed of short stories about an exceptionally wise girl, Danielle, and her pet whippet, Chuck. The dog is very timid but eager to please Danielle, who strives to show everyone how special Chuck is. Narrator Sachs succeeds with whatever persona he attempts, including portraying the inner thoughts of the nervous but loving whippet. Parts are absolutely hilarious. The text, as well as the voices of the adults, children and, of course, the dog, flows as one gorgeous melody from Sachs's lips. The child's inner fears are very natural while beautifully optimistic. The intended audience is juvenile, but this exquisitely presented story must be enjoyed by everyone. S.G.B. Winner of AUDIOFILE Earphones Award ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 98]
