NIGHT I DANCED WITH ROMMEL

Narrator Nancy Peterson captures the powerful emotions in this sublime historical novel, based on true events. Hilde Pickell was a happily married mother when her husband joined Field Marshall Rommel's 7th Panzer Brigade. Listeners will empathize with the spirited Pickell as she copes with privations, helps others, and is increasingly appalled at the changes she sees in her beloved Berlin. Peterson's portrayals of children, increasingly terrified Jews, and everyday citizens (including Pickell) standing up to the SS are both frightening and gratifying. Also, hearing the German and BBC radio broadcasts is riveting. Warm descriptions of food, the holidays, and small, joyful events add much needed levity.
