January LaVoy is so stunning in this latest Star Wars episode that one keeps thinking there MUST BE be other narrators as well. LaVoy's ability to carry all the primary and secondary characters, along with lesser beings and species, sometimes seems otherworldly itself. The extensive sound effects may just get listeners turning their heads, looking for storm troopers or X-wing fighters in the room. The effects also add to the authenticity of R2-D2, C-3PO, and a host of other droid species. However, they can be overdone and distracting, especially in the case of a range of tones and background conversations used to add drama. And, while this is Leia's story, a male voice for Han Solo would have been a great addition. M.C. © AudioFile 2016, Portland, Maine [Published: JUNE 2016]
