As he has in much of his life's work, Wise tackles white privilege and the problems of historical and cultural racism that penetrate a great many facets of U.S. society. In narrating, listeners get the opportunity to hear both his sincerity and passion as he recounts the ways in which white America perpetuates and contributes to racial inequalities in both recognized and unrecognized ways. His deep, slightly raspy voice maintains the listener's attention but could easily be misconstrued as harsh or angry. But Wise sounds fully cognizant of this possibility and regularly includes various emotive cues to indicate a more congenial disposition. Not all public speakers make the leap to narrator, but Wise gets the difference, and listeners will appreciate his attention to detail. L.E. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2017]
