A compilation of previously unpublished works by Barbara Pym, this volume consists of one complete novel, CIVIL TO STRANGERS, and sections of three others, short stories, and an autobiographical essay. The stories detail life in rural England during the period immediately before and during WWII. The essay represents the only written personal observations of Pym’s career as an author. Gretel Davis's narration adds authenticity to the ironies, whims and follies of the characters in the towns of Shropshire. Her voice furnishes credibility to the varied narratives, ranging from the nuances of romance to the trials of the Blitz to the retrospective of memory.
