Madame Karitska is old-world nobility, down on her luck but not her dignity. She makes a precarious living using her second sight to help others, but never to enrich herself. By degrees, she becomes the ally and friend of a very skeptical (at first) police detective. This charming book has all the signs of a series-opener, a series that apparently never materialized. But we have this fine entertainment, which Ruth Ann Phimister reads with warmth and intelligence. If Gilman ever decides to give Mrs. Pollifax a well-earned vacation and bring back Countess Karitska, she will surely find an eager audience. And Phimister should do the audiobook.
